Independence Training Centre

Our Centre offers personalized support from a team of highly skilled professionals, including Occupational Therapists (OTs), Physiotherapists (PTs), and Rehabilitation Support Workers (RSWs). Together, we work with clients to develop customized programs that promote physical, emotional, and social well-being.

  • Physical Activities Program

    The Physical Activities (PA) program at ICAN uses a multidisciplinary approach to deliver safe, personalized physical rehabilitation. Clients are assessed to identify their needs, and customized rehabilitation plans are created and regularly reviewed. We also incorporate activities the client enjoys to ensure their fitness routine is both effective and engaging.

  • Aqua Movement & Fitness

    The Aqua Movement & Fitness program utilizes the natural buoyancy and resistance of water to facilitate low-impact exercise, allowing participants to engage in physical activity safely. It is designed to progressively improve strength, mobility, and overall fitness through a structured series of water-based exercises.

  • TIME® – Together in Movement and Exercise

    This 12-week group exercise program supports individuals in maintaining an active, independent lifestyle by improving mobility, strength, balance, and social engagement.


    Developed by the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute and Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation.

  • FAME – Fitness and Mobility Exercise

    A group exercise program designed for individuals living with physical disabilities or post stroke conditions, targeting balance, strength, mobility, cardiovascular fitness, and mental health. The evidence-based FAME program improves physical and cognitive function while reducing the risk of falls, fractures, and heart disease.

Support & Education

ICAN is committed to empowering individuals living post-stroke and their care partners through tailored support and education.

  • Stroke Community Navigation Service

    Stroke Community Navigators help to support our clients in facilitating connections to stroke-based services within the community. We assist in finding transportation solutions, in-home nursing, personal care, housekeeping, physical activity programs, and other services offered by various community agencies. Our Navigators will also accompany clients to appointments and recreational centers if required.

  • Support Groups

    Our support groups help stroke survivors, and their care partners connect, share, and heal. Reducing isolation, building confidence, and providing practical recovery support.

    2nd Monday each month (10:30am – 11:30am EST)


    In Person Support Group – For Stroke Survivors 

    4th Friday each month (1:00pm – 2:30pm EST)


    Virtual Education Group – For Stroke Survivors & Care Partners

Individualized Rehabilitation Programs

ICAN offers personalized rehabilitation programs for individuals recovering from a stroke, focusing on their unique needs and goals.

  • Cognitive Rehabilitation & Life Skills

    The Cognitive Rehabilitation and Life Skills Program focuses on activities and interventions designed to assist stroke survivors regain their independence and improve their quality of life.  Strategies and tools are provided to improve cognition, memory, concentration, organizational abilities, communication and more.

  • Graded Repetitive Arm Supplementary Program (GRASP)

    A rehabilitation program designed to improve arm and hand function in individuals who have experienced a stroke. The program addresses functional movement and fine motor skills through strengthening, range of motion, and weight bearing exercises.

  • Mirror and Upper Extremity Program

    The Mirror Program for stroke rehabilitation leverages the power of visual feedback to aid in motor recovery and pain management, providing a non-invasive and effective approach to enhancing the well-being of stroke survivors.


    The upper extremity program is a personalized plan designed to enhance the individual’s range of motion and overall function.


    Assessments for both programs are conducted by an Occupational Therapist.

  • Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy Assessment Services

    Consulting Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists work closely with our Rehabilitation Support Team to assess your needs, identify key areas for improvement and develop personalized rehabilitation plans to enhance your independence and help you return to daily activities.

  • Speech Language Pathology Program

    Our program supports individuals with speech or communication challenges after a stroke. Consulting Speech-Language Pathologists provide assessments and offer one-on-one, group, and monthly maintenance sessions to improve communication and independence.
